This course provides a survey of the stages of literacy development, from emergence to fluency, and reviews the conditions that promote total literacy for children in early childhood. Language theories, current reading research, and assessment are featured, as well as remediation and intervention strategies indicated through diagnostic evaluation that can inform literacy development practices. Connections are made among all aspects of literacy learning (i.e., reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking). In addition to class meetings, field experiences in a kindergarten to grade 3 educational setting are required. This course is a Florida (2010) ESOL Endorsement competency-infused class and satisfies competencies for the Florida Reading Endorsement.
