Course Description:
This lecture and laboratory course introduces the theory and practical application of the modalities and treatment procedures used in physical therapy. The course presents the application of treatments, as well as the associated physiological effects, indications, and contraindications. These treatments include thermal and mechanical agents, electrical stimulation, and chest physical therapy.

Demonstrates clinical problem solving skills and professional judgment.

Instructs aides, volunteers, peers, and coworkers using established techniques, programs, and instructional materials commensurate with the learning characteristics of the audience.
 

6.   Data Collection:
Demonstrates competence in performing specific data-collection techniques as delegated by the supervising PT.
 

7.   Plan of Care:
Understands the plan of care written for the individual patient and implements delegated interventions to achieve the short- and long-term goals and outcomes identified in the plan of care.
 

8.   Intervention:
Implements the delegated inventions within the plan of care established by the PT monitor the patient response, and responds accordingly.


9.   Outcomes Measurements and Evaluation:
Uses data collection and communication to participate in determining a patient’s progress toward specific outcomes as established in the plan of care by the PT.

 
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the lecture component of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of current concepts in wound care and integration of hydrotherapy, electrical stimulation related to wound care, and appropriate dressings to achieve optimum healing. (T-1, T-4, T-7; O-4, O-7, O-8, O-9)
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of chest physical therapy and correct application of treatment techniques and postural drainage positions. (T-1, T-4, T-7; O-4, O-7, O8, O9)
     
  3. Demonstrate basic knowledge of upper and lower extremity amputations, treatment techniques and prosthetic devices.  (T-1, T-4, T-7; O-4, O-7, O-8, O-9)
     
  4. Demonstrate basic knowledge of lower extremity orthotics. (T-1, T-4, T-7; O-4, O-7, O-8, O-9)
     
  5. Demonstrate understanding of physiological theories and competency in applications of physical agents.  This will include knowledge of the purpose and effects, indications, contraindications, precautions and correct application of each of the following treatment modalities: hydrotherapy, fluidotherapy, ultrasound, traction, intermittent compression, electrical stimulation, TENS and biofeedback.   6. Demonstrate knowledge of the physiological theories, purpose and effects, indications, contraindications, precautions, and application procedures for: diathermy, ultraviolet, infrared, cold laser, CPM, and EMG. (T-1, T-4, T-7; O-4, O-7, O-8, O-9)
     

COURSE LAB OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Integrate treatment goals & intervention plans as outlined by the supervising physical therapist to devise a treatment strategy (T-3, T-5, T-7; O-5, O-7, O-8, O-9).
     
  2. Demonstrate good body mechanics, safe and adequate techniques during all physical agent procedures. (T-1, T-4, T-7; O-4, O-7, O-8, O-9)
     
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and effective application of wound healing, measurement and treatment of wounds with hydrotherapy.  (T-1, T-4, T-7; O-4, O-7, O-8, O-9)
     
  4. Demonstration of safe, sterile and clean techniques, during hydrotherapy treatment, measurement, dressing and bandaging procedures. (T-3, T-4, T-7; O-6, O-7, O-8)
     
  5. Demonstrate proper, safe, and effective applications of hot and cold packs, paraffin, and Cryo-therapy. (T-3, T-4, T-7; O-6, O-7, O-8)
     
  6. Demonstrates effective verbal communication of rationale of physical agents, both in medical terms to instructor and in simple terms to simulated patient.  (T-4, T-5, T-8; O-1, O-5, O-9)
     
  7. Demonstrate proper documentation of treatment sessions for all physical agent procedures, including (T-3, T-4, T-7, T-8; O-4, O-7, O-8, O-9);

a.  Modality utilized including: parameters, treatment time, part of the body treated.
b.  Patient’s response during the treatment session.
c.  Discharge plans and recommendations for the patient.

State Rule 6A-10.030 does not apply to this course.

 

Student Help

The professor is available for help during posted hours and by appointment during other non-class hours. Each student is encouraged to seek assistance from the professor. To further the educational process, the Learning Resources Centers, comprised of the campus Teaching/Learning and Computing Centers (TLCCs), JDA Student Success Center, and campus libraries, are available for student use. Each resource provides qualified staff and up-to-date equipment and facilities to promote academic success. The TLCCs and JDA Student Success Center provide tutoring services, computing resources, and other instructional support. The library provides information resources, individual and group study space, research assistance, information literacy instruction, and computing resources. Each facility provides free wireless access to the Internet. The Polk State College Library, Student Success Center, and TLCC hours of operation and tutoring schedules are posted at each facility and on the College website.

 

Withdrawing From a Course

A student may officially withdraw from a course during any given term, provided he or she follows the appropriate policy and procedure. Following the conclusion of the Drop period, students may officially withdraw without receiving a grade from any course, provided they do so no later than the published withdrawal deadline. The published deadline reflects approximately (but no more than) 70% of the term, based upon the course’s scheduled duration. It is the student’s responsibility to submit these withdrawal forms; failure to do so may result in a grade of F in the course. Under the Forgiveness Policy, a student is allowed only three attempts in any one course: one initial enrollment and two repeats. A student is not allowed to withdraw from a third course attempt. Limited admission programs may have specific guidelines regarding course withdrawal that vary from this policy; these guidelines are listed in the specific program handbooks. If a student stops attending class, the grade earned, usually an F, is assigned and posted. Prior to withdrawing from a course, the student should consult with the Financial Aid Office to determine what impact, if any, withdrawal from the course will have on his or her financial aid status. A student cannot use course withdrawal to avoid academic dishonesty penalties. A student who has been penalized for academic dishonesty in a course is not eligible to withdraw from the course.

 

Repeating a Course

Under the Forgiveness Policy, a student is allowed only three attempts in any one college credit course: one initial enrollment and two repeats. Under certain circumstances, a student may petition to repeat a credit course beyond the third attempt. Limited admission programs may have specific guidelines regarding repeating courses that vary from this policy; these guidelines are listed in the specific handbooks. The student should be aware that repeating a course may result in a higher course cost. A course cannot be repeated unless the previously earned grade is a D, F, or W (the Polk State Catalog provides further details regarding this process). Prior to repeating a course, the student should consult with the Financial Aid Office to determine what impact, if any, repeating the course will have on his or her financial aid status.

 

Academic Dishonesty

Each student is responsible for his or her work. It is assumed that each student is honest and will abide by this standard; however, in the event that there is an indication or suspicion of cheating or plagiarism, the situation shall be dealt with in accordance with the published College policy. Copies of this policy are available in the Student Services Office. More specific information can be found in the Course Syllabus.
