Medical Records Transcription, A.T.D.

The medical transcriptionist is a key member of the health care team and plays an integral role in preparing the descriptive information of the patient’s medical record. This record may include medical history, diagnosis, treatment, physical examinations, and discharge summaries.

This program is designed to prepare students for employment as medical transcriptionists/medical language specialists in health care facilities including hospitals, physicians’ offices, clinics, medical transcription companies, or as independent contractors. Medical transcriptionists with experience may attain positions as Certified Language Specialists, Quality Assurance Specialists/Editors, Recruiters, Trainers, Transcription Supervisors, and Transcription Managers. Most of the jobs in this area are home-based, making this field desirable for those individuals desiring flexible work schedules.

Students scoring below required levels on state-mandated placement tests in English, reading, and mathematics are required to enroll in and complete the appropriate college preparatory course(s) before enrolling in some program requirement courses.

Admission Criteria

1. Students must gain admission to Polk State College.
2. Students must complete college preparatory course(s) if needed.

Certification Exam

Graduate transcriptionists will be eligible to take the national certification exam offered by the Association for Health Care Documentation Integrity (AHDI) to become a Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT). Information regarding eligibility and scheduling of the exam is available through the Program Director.
