Through the use of transfer majors, Polk State College offers preparation for many specific majors offered throughout the Florida State University System (SUS) and the Florida College System (FCS). This is known as the state’s 2+2 articulation. The selection of a transfer major and a transfer institution serves as a course-requirement guide for a student who plans to earn an Associate of Arts (AA) in Liberal Arts (AA) degree before transferring to a Florida state university or a Florida College System institution offering baccalaureate degrees (such as Polk State) to complete a specific four-year degree.
Each transfer major displays the required courses to satisfy General Education requirements, as well as the statewide common course prerequisites required for specific baccalaureate programs from the state’s Common Prerequisite Manual. Polk State makes use of guided pathways via Program Maps for many common transfer majors. A Program Map provides the student with a guide for course enrollment to finish a degree in a timely manner. For the Associate in Arts (AA) degree, Program Maps are provided for the most common transfer intents. A map lists the courses a student must complete to earn the AA and be ready to transfer into a given baccalaureate degree program. A Program Map also lists the courses a student must complete to earn the degree and be ready to enter the workforce. The Program Map is intended to be a guide; the student should always consult with a student success advisor to develop a personalized Education Plan before beginning courses. AA transfer intents, as well as degree and certificate programs are organized into eight Pathways.
A student also can access the transfer major degree audit found in PASSPORT. With this degree audit, a student can plan his or her path to the AA in Liberal Arts degree more effectively and minimize the potential for excess credit hours. Each student must remain cautious with enrollment, withdrawals, and retakes, as excess hours accrued toward a baccalaureate degree can incur additional cost in tuition at the university level.
