This course provides a survey of the stages of literacy development, from emergence to fluency, and reviews the conditions that promote total literacy for all children (pre-K through third grade). Language theories, current reading research, assessment, and remediation/interventions indicated through diagnostic evaluation are used to shape informed practices regarding literacy development. Connections are made among all aspects of literacy learning: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking. In addition to class meetings, field experience in an age 3 to grade 3 educational setting is required. This course satisfies Florida Reading Endorsement (2011) Competency Three (Foundations of Assessment).
