Program: B8060

The medical transcriptionist is a key member of the health care team and plays an integral role in preparing the descriptive information of the patient’s medical record. This record may include medical history, diagnosis, treatment, physical examinations, and discharge summaries.

This program is designed to prepare students for employment as medical transcriptionists/medical language specialists in health care facilities including hospitals, physicians’ offices, clinics, medical transcription companies, or as independent contractors. Medical transcriptionists with experience may attain positions as certified language specialists, quality assurance specialists/editors, recruiters, trainers, transcription supervisors, and transcription managers. Most of the jobs in this area are home-based, making this field desirable for those individuals desiring flexible work schedules.

Students who score below the required levels on state-mandated placement tests in writing, reading, and mathematics must enroll in and complete the appropriate college preparatory courses before they enroll in some required program courses.

Program Hours

Courses will be offered in a non-traditional format; students may contact the Program Director at mtinfo@polk.edu for scheduling information.

Certification Exam

Graduate transcriptionists will be eligible to take the national certification exam offered by the Association for Health Care Documentation Integrity (AHDI) to become a Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT). Information regarding eligibility and scheduling of the exam is available through the Program Director.
