The Florida Correctional Basic Recruit Training Certificate Program provides entry-level job training to candidates for correctional officer and detention deputy positions. The curriculum is prescribed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, in accordance with Florida Statutes. This program requires the enrolling individual to be physically and mentally strong, fair-minded, and constantly alert. 

Upon completion of the program, the individual must pass the State Officer Certification Exam before receiving provisional certification. This certification is required for employment as a correctional officer in either a county or state correctional institution. 

This program is offered in partnership with the Florida Department of Corrections and local sheriff’s offices. Each program candidate must submit an application to the Kenneth C. Thompson Institute of Public Safety Office.
