OTH 1520C - Pediatric Principles and Interventions, and the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Capstone Project

This course enables a student to apprise occupational therapy theories and models within the pediatric setting, as well as the occupational therapy assistant’s role while working with pediatric patients of various diagnoses and socioeconomic backgrounds. Developmental stages, sensory and motor-skill development, basic pediatric neurology, and congenital and acquired pathologies are discussed. The course surveys various assistive and augmentative technologies utilized with the pediatric population. The student examines occupation-based pediatric evaluation tools, treatment approaches, effective communication and interaction skills, documentation methods and techniques, and the therapeutic use of self. 

This course contains a Capstone Component, in which the student is required to complete a final project. A case study is provided in which the student is required to choose appropriate intervention materials, provide the intervention, and then write a brief treatment note on the session.
