SYG 2221 - Gender in Society 3 hours Lecture, 3 credit(s) Lower-Division College Credit Prerequisite(s): Acceptable placement examination score or completion of the required college preparatory courses in writing and reading This course introduces the sociology of gender roles. The curriculum examines changing sex and gender roles in society with particular attention paid to traditional and contemporary socialization patterns, as well as changing sexual, social, political, economic, legal, work, and family roles within social institutions. This course includes interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives and examines diverse experiences in the U.S. and throughout the world. The curriculum includes the social construction of gender roles related to work, reproduction, sexuality and romance, health, power and politics, religion, and crime. This course also explores discrimination based on the interconnections between gender, race, and social class.
