Program: 68130
The emergency medical technician (EMT) is a member of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team delivering out-of-hospital emergency care under the direction of an emergency physician. EMTs are a mainstay with public health and community service agencies, operating emergency vehicles that respond to emergency rescue calls and other life-threatening situations. The EMT cares for victims of accidents or sudden illnesses by stabilizing them and then safely transporting them to the hospital emergency department.
Program Prerequisite
Emergency Medical Responder (EMS 1059C) is the prerequisite course for entrance into the EMT Certificate Program. The student may also choose the Emergency Medical Responder Credit-by-Exam option (the required score is 70 percent or higher). Successful completion of this exam provides the student with Polk State College credit for the Emergency Medical Responder course.
Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs):
After successful completion of the program, the graduate is able to:
PLO 1: Demonstrate the competencies and didactic principles, roles, and responsibilities of an emergency medical technician (EMT) within the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system.
PLO 2: Identify normal and abnormal findings while demonstrating the techniques of conducting a comprehensive patient interview and physical exam.
PLO 3: Demonstrate effective verbal communication, assessment techniques, and written communication for patient-care reports using all the various formats identified in the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards.
PLO 4: Demonstrate competency in fulfilling the role of the entry-level emergency medical technician (EMT), including the appropriate psychomotor and affective domains and assessment-based patient care.

Total Program Hours: 12
Note: If a student is unsuccessful in either EMS 1158 Emergency Medical Technology or EMS 1158L Emergency Medical Technology Lab/Clinical, the student must reenroll in the failed course during the next course offering and successfully complete the course requirements to qualify for the state examination. A student who fails to reenroll in the next course offering of the failed course must repeat both EMS 1158 and EMS 1158L to qualify to retake the state examination.
Receiving below an 80 percent on three exams–or below an 80 percent as an overall average on the practical exams–in EMS 1158 Emergency Medical Technology results in a failing grade.
